It was probably a Cicada, which some people call locusts. They are quite large and they do have very odd life cycles, with a nymph stage in which they live underground and eat tree roots. Up here, I would associate them with making a very long drawn out buzzing sound that continues for many seconds before it stops... almost sounds like a whining saw blade. However, they usually make that noise in the middle of a very hot afternoon.. the kind when the sun feels like it is blasting the earth.

Tsk tsk tsk.. so you used to tie firecrackers to these Cicadas??!!!!

Well, actually, I and a few friends, used to pull up little Bloodroot flowers and paint ourselves with the "blood" to make a dark red warpaint all over our faces and arms. Probably not particular good for the survival of Bloodroot flowers. When I was about 5, a couple of friends and I used chunks of charcoal from a burnt log to paint ourselves all black to look like the heroic horse, Black Beauty. And yes, we were wild little hoodlums.. and some would tell you that I haven't change a bit.
