That would appear to be a fantasy, or at the very least, disinformation.

EDGE is only (being marketed as) a software upgrade for those carriers that are taking delivery of EDGE capable transceivers, and those transceivers only started to ship this year, are only shipping for GSM850/1900, and won't ship for GSM900/1800 till at least the second half of this year.
