Suppose that you and me are sitting at the same table, 2 meters apart, and you are droning on about some fascinating topic . . . say, government employee efficiency. Let's call the level of my boredom with your blather, X.

If I move to a table across the room, so that we are now 10 meters apart, and I can barely hear you, the level of my boredom will be proportionally diminished. The boring force of your blather will be: X/5
