I also think that bars traditionally provide anonymity and equality, at least for the sake of jokes.

But I don't agree with the music bit.

To me, the ideal bar is the English village pub. When I was over there travelling around I spent a fair number of evenings in local pubs, even though I didn't drink alcohol. They were quite content to serve me a good ginger beer. But they were really social clubs, just quiet places for people of all classes to meet friends and talk -- the mostly male equivalent of sewing bees. Canned music would have been an intrusion, though from time to time song would break out, or a local musician would bring out a fiddle or such (especially in the Irish pubs). They were places of social interaction, not as they have become more today in this country places of isolation.

Of course, that was nearly 40 years ago, before TV became ubiquitous.
