Say what??? Forward and backward compatibility makes a world of difference.

Granted a IS95 handset will not support 1x data rates but you can place a voice call.

GSM-GPRS-WCDMA not a chance

GSM/ TDMA Carriers should be real happy about the additional subsidies if the network cost and spectrum do not break them first.

What do you mean? The CDMA path is fully backwards compatible at all steps. No one is forced to get a new phone. Not so for the GSM path. Once on the CDMA road, a phone will always work on the network. To start significant data abilities with the GSM path, you need a phone with GPRS, and at least another when switched to WCDMA. Perhaps no new phone is needed when a network is upgraded to EDGE, so I was wrong. Only twice as many phones on the GSM road.

Enormous difference if lots more towers have to be built. Nokia and ERICY prosper, carriers bleed.

Hemorrhage, if they're cash strapped Europeans.

Perhaps the 5% cap on royalties Nokia proposes will solve the problem.

LOL!

What fools these mortals be.
