Americans abandoned Afghanistan after the Russians were defeated. No one wanted to be associated with the horrible mess they had created.

I have come to the conclusion that Afghanistan is composed of several tribes that hate each other, and spend their time fighting with each other, except when they take time out to fight a common foe.(Like the American Indians a couple of centuries ago, or we Irish 500 years ago)

It has never been"sweetness and light" there, and I don't expect it to change anytime soon.

It doesn't surprise me that the Americans abandoned Afghanistan after the Russians were defeated.

Think back.

Supporting the mujahideen against the Soviets was Reagan's policy, supported (but I don't think as enthusiastically) by Bush (I). The Soviet-backed Afghani government collapsed in 1992.

What else happened in 1992? Clinton was elected.

The administration was no longer Republican.

Bush (II) will help the Afghanis, but do you really think President Daschle or President Gore (God forbid) would make it a priority?
