Jim Crow serfdom which was almost as ugly and brutal as slavery. I won't buy into the "Guilt Trip", Cobalt. everybody had slaves in the 19th century,some Arab, African, and Asian countries still do, and a lot of countries still have their own type of "Jim Crow serfdom". Take a look at India and their caste system. Nobody gets civilized overnight. Remember it was the moral pressure from the North that ended slavery though war, and Jim Crow though pressure. I won't "Bury my Heart at Wounded Knee" for the Indians, either.
