Maybe the difference on this board is between those who think Israel should not try to negotiate until the Palestinians really quit fighting, and those who think Israel should unilaterally pull out of the territories and they try to negotiate.

Lindy,

I have recently come to a third position. The parties in the middle east should be left alone to fight it out. North America and Europe should stay out until asked to provide help - only if there is a credible attempt for peace being made in the area.

Paul

I was merely commenting on the article you posted, which idealized, in my opinion, both Israel's foundation and the foundation of the United States.

It is ironic that the author sneered at Bishop Tutu, who could teach the Israelis a lesson or two about nation-building.

LB,

<< Maybe the difference on this board is between those who think Israel should not try to negotiate until the Palestinians really quit fighting, and those who think Israel should unilaterally pull out of the territories and they try to negotiate. >>

Agreed.

But what's Israel's official excuse for expanding the settlements (at US taxpayers' expense) and drawing the ire of the international community? It's self-inflicted damage. No suicidal terrorists involved here, only extremist Israelis still looking for Greater Israel. Just look at the current power struggle now in Israel with Sharon and his extremist right wing buddies over the future a Palestinian state.
