I don't advocate the 'benign neglect' policy. I think the US should make it clear that Palestine, Israel and the Middle East is none of it's concern and, barring interference from other outsiders, will not get involved until asked by all sides to mediate or police a credible peace. This is in no way benign or neglect.

The continued half-way interference of mostly uninterested third parties allows the situation to continue in an unstable state. For convenience and to avoid moderate political pain the current US policy ensures that most Palestinians will remain living in poverty with no hope, many Israelis will continue to die in suicide attacks, the risk level in that part of the world continues to rise and hatred and blame of the US accelerates.

The current policies are insane. For almost nothing gained we are ensuring a horrible outcome.
