In the overall market for servers, which run Web sites and manage corporate inventories and customer lists, Santa Clara, California-based Sun's U.S. share grew to 23.6 percent, from 21.9 in the fourth quarter and 21.4 percent in the first quarter of 2001, Gartner analyst Shahin Naftchi said. In the more-profitable market for servers that run on the Unix operating system, Sun's share grew to 53.9 percent, from 53.5 percent in the previous quarter and 50.7 percent a year ago. Armonk, New York-based IBM's sales of Unix machines fell to 17.3 percent, from 19 percent in the fourth quarter of 2001 and 21.3 percent in the first quarter. Products IBM has released in the past year or so have challenged Sun's lead in Unix machines, helping IBM edge out Sun in the fourth quarter for the first time since 1998, IDC, a separate market researcher said in March. IBM last month reported lower-than-expected sales, prompting Sun executives to predict they had gained share against their chief rival. IBM's U.S. share of the overall market was 29.3 percent in the first quarter, down from 31.8 percent in the fourth quarter and up from 27.9 percent in the first quarter of 2001. Hewlett-Packard Hewlett-Packard, before recently merging with Compaq Computer Corp., also gained share in both markets, rising to 9.6 percent in sales overall, from 8.4 percent in the previous quarter and 8.8 percent in the year-earlier period. Its share of the Unix based market grew to 19.8 percent, from 17 percent in the previous quarter and 16.6 in the first quarter of 2001. Compaq's share in the overall market was 12.6 in the first quarter, down from 15.3 in the fourth quarter and up from 13.9 percent in first quarter of 2001. Dell Computer Corp. had 10.3 percent share, down from 9.1 percent in the fourth quarter and 12.2 percent in the year-earlier period. All figures are based on revenue. Gartner said it would release worldwide market share numbers in several weeks. Access More Information and Services Above ©2002 Bloomberg L.P. All rights reserved.
