Netanyahu: PM must 'listen closely' to Likud on statehood issue

By Yossi Verter, Ha'aretz Correspondent and Ha'aretz Service

Former prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Tuesday that his political rival, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon "needs to listen closely" to the decision Sunday night by the Likud Central Committee to adopt a resolution rejecting a Palestinian state.

"The prime minister certainly must listen closely to the Likud," Netanyahu told Israel Radio. "It is a party of people who are worried like me about the security of the state and are concerned that a Palestinian state would threaten our existence."

Sharon pledged Monday that his policies will not be affected by the Likud Central Committee's decision.

"I want to clarify that the considerations that guide me, that influence my decisions, are national issues: Israel's security and attaining peace," he told a meeting of the Likud's Knesset faction Monday. "Let there be no doubt: This is what guided me in the past, and it will continue to guide me in the future. I respect the Central Committee members, but the responsibility is mine. The responsibility for what happens rests on my shoulders. Two-thirds of the public elected me in order to make decisions - and I decided. In order to achieve security and peace, I must work steadfastly, wisely and patiently. No one will turn me from my path - and certainly not internal political considerations nor personal machinations."

Sharon's remarks were in open defiance of the Central Committee, which voted by an overwhelming majority Sunday night in favor of a resolution stating that "no Palestinian state will be established west of the Jordan River." The vote was a serious defeat for Sharon, who has several times spoken in favor of a Palestinian state, and whose bid for a postponement of the vote on the resolution was soundly rejected shortly before the vote itself.

Sharon also denied that the embarrassing defeat signaled the collapse of his premiership. "The elections will be held as scheduled, on October 28, 2003," he told the Likud MKs yesterday.
