Thankfully the BIG BOYS are forced to reconsider their excesses.

In the last fourteen months after retreating from a topped out market I looked hard at the availability for broadband connection and decided that the local ILEC, CLEC's and cable company were not even going to consider lighting broadband internet in our community.

Timely decision indeed. I discovered the Wi-Fi frequencies and the decision by the FCC to keep the channels unlicensed. This combined with enough good equipment to purchase I put together a team of friends and we built our network.

Now we have covered our town and three others within 30 miles have ordered local loops back to hook to our ordered OC-3 to aggregate to the ATM cloud.

We market to the public using a pricing that most can afford and offer synchronous connection with VPN capable services. Lots of attorneys, real estate agencies, doctors, daytraders and lone eagles occupy our airwaves today. We are expanding into three new markets within the next 90 days and have established partnerships with local ISP's in each of our market areas to become their high speed provider allowing them ownership of the customer while charging them a wholesale rate.

Equipment cost is $250 and install is $99 and this allows us to become profitable with a client within less than 4 months.

All this from them being asleep at the wheel.

Thank god for credit cards and creative financing and a little begging from our suppliers. Overrun of Cisco routers and IBM switches and Ebay purchasing has built a world class system on hometown funding.

We have a backlog of hundreds of customers waiting for us to catch up with ourselves and get them hooked up. We are training installers as fast as we can and buying up old Subarus to make into install vans.

I remember a post on SI a few years ago when it looked like the market was headed where it was.

It said simply, " INVEST IN YOURSELF! "

Glad I did.

So to sum my feelings up.

The backlog has created a large hole that I hope to fill. When they finally figure it out I may have a system that will fetch a fair price with paying clients and profitable.

If not it has been the best learning experience this landscaper has ever had.

Eric, Thanks for your informative post. Have you seen the Robert Cringely article in the latest Worth Magazine saying "Broadband is Dead"? I wonder what you or others on this thread think about this article. I just skimmed a hardcopy of it, maybe someone can post it here.
