Charity is good and important -- I worked in the nonprofit field for many years. But there are certain functions which can only be done by the collective will we know as government. Not that there's not a lot wrong with ours. But even the most dedicated libertarians don't advocate doing away with all government totally. The issue is what government should and should not do. And for me, one thing it should do is assure the availability of basic protections and services to people who are simply unable to provide them for themselves. Such as young children.
