The most interesting of her characters ( Atlas Shrugged ) is the guy how tried to keep the railroad running after the heiress took off to the mountain lair of John Gault and the rest of the Atlases.

Actually it shows your lack of understanding of the difference between self-interest and ego mania. Ayn Rand advocated harmonious and healthful self-interest not the shallow drug induced ego mania of Hollywood movie stars. Although she would not have begrudged them their due or their achievements.

She did not believe in sacrificing one-self to God or to society. Actually she saw religion and the social government as the enemy of freedom and against one's self-interest. She defined capitalism as the freedom of the individual from the tyranny of both religion and the state.
