The last time Israel was in serious danger, in 1973, the US did nothing at all until Israel had thrown back the attack and was winning. Then it stepped in.

I have to disagree. Israel was in serious danger from battlefield losses of equipment until the U.S. began a massive resupply airlift.

That's what really incensed the Arabs, and led to the subsequent oil boycott of the West.

People are a bit cagey about what role the threat that Israel would have to resort to nuclear weapons played in the U.S. decision. Even if it was never mentioned, it was real enough.

After the resupply the Israelis took the offensive, and a U.N. brokered ceasefire went into effect when Egypt's last major armored force was trapped and on the brink of destruction.
