Wi-Fi is a nice start in creating public awareness of what is possible. But after all, Wi-Fi (802.11b) is a Local Area Networking standard, not a wide or metro area networking standard. What is market making about Wi-Fi is that it uses public spectrum and it is mass produced based on a standard. what also makes it possible is that IC technology has reached a point of development that cheap VLSI ICs can be manufactured using CMOS or similar mass production methods.

Going forward what will make wireless break out as a mass market phenomena is the 802.16a WirelessMAN (Metro Area Network) standard and the coming together of a brew of technologies and manufacturing processes that makes for exponential improvement in range, capacity, form factor and cost.
