At the same time, I must say I'm listening to a series of lectures on Roman civilization. For a number of centuries, they were able to develop a government class which spent money both frugally and well. A Roman citizen worked two days to pay his taxes to the government, yet got roads, infrastructure, military defense, et. al.

And had the highest standard of living seen until 20th century America.

Or course, it was built in part on the backs of slaves, but that's free enterprise for you. <g>
