I think that a drying up of the weekly money spigot by parishoners who are tired of subsidizing rapists and plaintiff's lawyers will be even more effective. If the government starts revoking tax exempt status for criminal activity there won't be many tax exempts left I'm afraid.

I think I read somewhere that the Church was sued a few weeks ago for violations of the federal RICO statute (Racketeer Influenced Corrupt Organizations). That's the federal racketeering statute, which creates superpenalties for patterns of criminal behavior which result in multiple violations of certain federal laws.
