The "de-nationalization" of the railways has been a disaster unfortunately. Passenger rail systems make sense in Briton. They don't here, due to the distances involved and our road system. Our passenger system is a total boondoggle, like our farm support system. How do these incompetents get picked? You guys still have a "Class" system, and it leads to more of this type of nonsense than we get. The "meritocracy" of our University entrance systems tends to keep the rich idiots at a minimum. Unfortunately, the ones who do get through the Ivy League colleges tend to end up on the foreign desks of the State Department.
