T, The Crow were on Custer's side. He just didn't have enough of them. It was the Sioux and the Cheyenne he discovered in quantity. His entire experience of Indian fighting had taught him: cavalry shows up, Indians run away. The reason he split his troops was so the Indians couldn't escape. They didn't.
