VDA/Germany Apr Car Registrations -2: 4-Mo Orders -6%

FRANKFURT (Dow Jones)--German new car registrations rose 3% in April on the
year to 303,000, Germany's car manufacturers' association, VDA, said Monday.

However, the figures still show a downward trend. Adjusted for the two
additional working days in April this year, estimated new registrations fell 4%
from March, VDA said in a press statement. Official data from the German
Department of Motor Vehicles is due later this month.

In the first four months of the year, new car registrations, which mirror
sales, fell 2% in Europe's biggest car market, to 1.10 million.

Demand for new cars is still sputtering, VDA said, with buyers holding back
due to economic uncertainty. VDA pointed to Germany's lingering wage disputes
and the higher cost of driving, including fuel prices.

Domestic and foreign orders for new cars rose 6% in April on the year, but
were down 4% on a seasonally adjusted basis, VDA said. In the first four
months, new orders fell 6% from the year-earlier period, VDA said.

Still, the German market should be stronger in the second half of the year,
VDA said.
