"Don't you get pretty close to 360 degrees?"
They have a device in the centre of the carbody called a hydroswivel. It essentially an hydraulic cylinder divided into vertical compartments with large o-rings. This runs the track motors. So you can swing around and around and around, in the same direction with no problem.

"Dipping out a pond would definitely work a lot better in a machine like that"
I made a lake of about 2 acres, for a trout fishing place, and the digger worked great. In the end I got one of my buddies in and I passed the dirt up to him and he loaded into the trucks. It was a peat bog. The big advantage in swinging 180 degrees behind is that you do not have to reverse the machine rotation. Takes a bit of getting used to but it is much more efficient.

If you can run a joystick backhoe then you could easily run an excavator. They are much more comfortable and the only big thing to get used to is making it travel with your feet. Maybe you could rent one next time you want to clean out your pond?

I am starting up a pair of Mercruiser 302's that I built last winter (351 heads and a four barrel Holley} and those small rod bolts scare the shit out of me. I hope they don't go boom!!
