Compaq Telecom of Omaha, Neb., Is Also Absorbed by Hewlett-Packard Merger May 13, 2002 (Omaha World-Herald - Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News via COMTEX) -- Compaq Direct, which manufactures computers, is not the only Compaq Computer Corp. unit in Omaha to become part of Hewlett-Packard. Compaq Telecom, working out of a building at 90th Street and Western Avenue, designs, develops, tests, delivers and supports software for the telecommunications industry, serving phone companies and equipment manufacturers. The wireless business is Compaq Telecom's major marketplace, said Gary Isobaker, who runs the Omaha operation. One of Telecom's principal products is a piece of software that carries data about a cell phone subscriber and his phone. The software can keep track of where the phone is and what features it carries. Isobaker anticipates changes will be coming with the merger with Hewlett-Packard but does not know what they will be. "We'll deal with them as they come," he said. Like Compaq Direct, which formerly was an Inacom Corp. operation, Compaq Telecom is a Compaq Computer Corp. acquisition. It was purchased from Tandem Computers. Compaq Telecom has its headquartered in Plano, Texas. Isobaker, who has been in Omaha for 16 months, directs a staff of 118. The building houses an additional 22 people from other Compaq Computer Corp. operations.
