I never finished "Silas Marner". I should do that. Among great novelists is E.M. Forster, who has never gotten justice from Merchant/Ivory, in my opinion, although "A Passage to India" came closest. "Howard's End" is probably his best book. If you have not read Hermann Hesse's "Magister Ludi", also known as "The Glass Bead Game", that is a real pleasure, especially for a Johnnie. Also, among many fine works, C.S. Lewis produced a novel based on the Cupid and Psyche story called "Till We Have Faces" that I believe rises to the level of masterpiece. I have generally been remiss with George Elliott. I have started about 3 of her books, found them engaging, but became distracted before total immersion in the story.
