“My manlift has a large peg that limits it at just a degree or two shy of being able to go round and round. Haven't been able to figure out why, and it's really annoying because if you want to get more than 180 degrees of spin out of it”
The reason is that the motor is in the bottom and the controls on the top. If you went round and round it would tear up all the wires etc.

“you have to make sure it's facing the right way. And (as I'm sure is true of an excavator), it takes a second to determine what's front and back on it.”
With a digger you just look at the tracks to see which end is which. After a while it becomes automatic to know which end you are working off. They will lift quite a bit more off the front, longer on that end and final drive weight at the back, and it is bad for the sprockets if you dig off the back.

“How are they about traveling up steep inclines?”
Good, you can pull, or push, yourself uphill with the bucket.

“Can it handle anything my backhoe can handle as long as I keep the boom uphill?”
In my experience it will handle a lot more. Once you are in position on the hill you can swing around as long you do not swing a lot of weight out too far over the side.

“I can't imagine why anyone would run a marine engine at high revs”
Nope. The boat is propped so that it limits them to about 4,200. I have 2 - 454’s in my old tub and am building new ones right now. I have gone with an extra 60-70 thou valve lift, decreased the cam spread a couple of degrees and kept the duration about the same. I am hoping to get 30 knots at about 4,500. Slurp!! Big rod bolts!!
