September was almost 8 months ago, in between we had a fabulous bull run to 2100, or than 50%, we may simply be in another bear market that requires its own capitulation. Historically, that is admittedly a short period, but you got to have "outliers". I think that the run to 2100 predicted the recovery we had since September (including the outsized gain in GDP in the first quarter) and now the market may be facing new fears, particularly the fact that the various "things" that were done (rightfully, IMTO) to prevent an economic collapse after 9/11 have longer term consequences, which we will start and face soon. Last, multi year "bear markets" (like the general period of 1966 to 1982, despite the intermittent respites) usually produce not just the "norm" in PE, but reach the bottom of the range to create uncommon values.
