Palestinian terror and statehood

While the media remains fixated on the politics surrounding the Likud Central Committee's vote to oppose the creation of a Palestinian state west of the Jordan River permanently, it tends to overlook the much more important problems of today ? continuing Palestinian terrorism that would make any such state a serious threat to Israel. If anything, the Likud vote does show that Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, who is constantly caricatured in the press as an "enemy of peace," has actually become Israel's foremost defender of what's left of the peace process begun under Yitzhak Rabin.

Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat "never offered any substantive ideas [for peace], not once" during the 15 days of talks at Camp David in the summer of 2000, former US peace negotiator Dennis Ross said yesterday.

Sharon called for the immediate launching of peace talks, but with a "different Palestinian Authority." He said for peace talks to start, the PA must halt violence and incitement and undergo basic structural reforms in all areas, including in security and justice. "There can be no peace with a corrupt terrorist regime," he said.

Sharon added that he has made clear more than once he is willing to "make painful concessions" for true peace.

His statement to the Knesset was approved by 43-15, with the support of the Labor Party.
