US commando raid targeted "senior Taliban commander": general
(Updated at 1000 PST)
WASHINGTON: US commandos who raided a compound north of Kandahar this week were searching for a senior Taliban commander, but it was not known whether he was among those captured or killed, a senior US military official said on Wednesday.

Marine Corps General Peter Pace, vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, would not say whether the target of the raid was Mullah Mohammad Omar, the Taliban leader who has eluded US forces since the fall of Kandahar last year.

"It is possible that the leader we are looking for is among the dead, it is possible that he is among the detainees, and it is possible that he was not there, or slipped away," Pace said at a Pentagon news briefing.
