Don't these two thoughts conflict?

We all seek truth within the context of contemporary knowledge. .... Mastery of all knowledge has given way to the "Idiot's Guide" to pouring a drink, petting your dog, or scratching your bum.

I tend to agree with the later. The former? It seems more like people want to be told 'the truth'. Actually, they passively choose to believe as truth what they want to hear. Challenge a belief and you're more than likely confronted with insults rather than a logical or philosophical defense; undefendable pre-conceived notions.

Admittedly, it's been a long while since I studied philosophy...are there any living philosphers like those of days past?

Cheers,
