HH,

I think if we can eliminate the extremist equation from both the Arabs and the Israelis then I concur with your assessment. The expanding settlements is a self-inflicted diplomatic wound which isn't exactly helping the current situation.

Sure, Israel can win this conflict with overwhelming military supremacy but are the people of Israel willing to live with the subsequent political implications? Does Israel really wish to isolate herself from the rest of the international community, shunned and ostracized? But worse, the UN or members of the European Union, may stage an economic boycott against Israel (Norway is a currently example) as punishment. I am not saying this is fair or justified, only that this is one of the possible consequences of the complete colonization of the West Bank and Gaza Strip (along with the expulsion of the Arabs from these territories). And we both know how much Israel depends upon European commerce for her economic stability.

We don't want Israel to become the American version of Cuba, do we?

HH you are right Iran Iraq Syria and mostly Saudi Arabia are using the Israeli -Arab conflict to their interest as is Egypt.

The best case can be made about US intention to topple Saddam of Iraq. Saudia and Iraq together brought the Israeli Arab conflict to a boiling point and by this diverting any action toward Iraq.

If Saddam would be toppled by the US there are is a great possibility that this country will turn into real democracy and that's the death of the Saudi rein of terror over their citizen. Saudi Arabia will positively disintegrate in several smaller countries along various tribal lines and part of it would be attached to Jordan ......... and that is exactly what the Saud Clan does not want.
