U.S. consumer prices rise in April

WASHINGTON, May 15 (Reuters) - U.S. consumer prices posted their biggest rise in nearly a year in April as the cost of gasoline moved higher, the government said on Wednesday in a report that showed the inflation-dampening effect of last year's drop in goods prices fading.

The Consumer Price Index increased 0.5 percent in April, the Labor Department said, as gasoline prices climbed over 10 percent to post their biggest gain since June 2000. It was the biggest increase in the CPI since May of last year, when it rose a matching 0.5 percent.

Excluding volatile food and energy prices, the so-called core CPI rose a slightly higher-than-expected 0.3 percent, after a slim 0.1 pct March gain.

Economists polled by Reuters had expected consumer prices to rise 0.4 percent, with core prices up 0.2 percent.
