But there wasn't technology within a 10yr horizon to extract gold from sea water.. Yeah, those biotechs again.

Most folks don't realize that bio is still in its infancy. Medical is the first application because it is the way to the quickest and largest profits, but when the technology becomes mainstream it will be applied to manufacturing, energy, every phase of life.

This is how bio-tech differs from the computer industry. Electricity can only process information. Little bio-bugs will manipulate all sorts of matter.
