To some extent, that is true. However, the focus is, in fact, on the events occasioned by the refusal to do business with Solazzo. That leads to the attack on Vito, Sonny's war and death, Michael's assassination of Solazzo and the police captain, his exile to Sicily, and Vito's efforts to bring the war to a close. Then, the real climax is Michael's vendetta against all of the enemies of the family, to "balance accounts", towards the end of the book.

What is the moral to the story? I think the real moral is that talented and ambitious people will not be satisfied with being peons, and will resort to crime if that is the only way that they can find their place in the world. Thus, an efficient social system will ensure that they have an outlet for their ambition and talents that does not involve murder and extortion, but harnesses their energies in socially productive ways......
