IC fab capacity shrinks as chip makers close older plants The word is that wafer starts are going up. Margins may be down a tad though. Lots of news on that point. Here is a March 02 news item. siliconstrategies.com The race to create some "supply" is well under way. This is how the semis make a profit. To keep the cost of the wafer down you start lots of wafers to cover fixed overhead. The amount of depreciation in 200mm and 300mm plant is a tad high, so you gotta start a fair number of wafers each month. The channel may get stuffed a little. Actually I think a weak dollar will be good for the USA. Somebody might think of keeping some industry and jobs there. (Sorry, I realize that was almost a communist thing to say). SAN JOSE -- Worldwide IC wafer processing capacity declined 3.4% in the fourth quarter of 2001 from an all-time high in Q3 last year as integrated circuit manufacturers accelerated the closing of older and obsolete fabrication plants, according to new data from the Semiconductor Industry Association. So we got the foundries winding up starts to moderate gale force and "the older obsolete" factories are being closed down. Hardly any low tech will be left. How sad -g-
