The level of corruption in American business culture is at an all time high, and it astonishes me that the American public allow this to go on. Listening to Senate Hearings today on the clearly criminal manipulation of the California/West Coast energy market, it astonished me that the head of the regulatory agency in charge of the industry, Pat Wood of FERC, was unwilling to commit to extending the only means that could control the outright criminal behavior of our corporations, i.e. price caps on wholesale electrical rates. Instead, Wood suggested a ridiculous "Must Serve" mandate as the solution after price caps end on Sept. 30 on the present schedule. It is unconscionable that citizens of this nation are ruined by excessive and illegal rate charges, and the regulators turn a blind eye to criminal behavior. What in the world are we coming to? How can we as a country present ourselves to the world as a model of anything other than depravity and arrogance? The American capitalist system is broken. It is only when we begin to punish the criminal element in charge of our nations economic affairs that we will have the moral authority to lead the world. As things stand now, billions of people across the globe understand the utterly hollow claims we make to the moral high ground in the war on terrorism. Enron terrorized the citizenry of California, and the FERC and the Administration did nothing until the howls of pain came from Republican businessmen in California whose ox was being gored. Who is the terrorist? The Bush Administration? -Ray
