Joe, Re: "the fastest Duron is $62 on PriceWatch, and $79, you can get AXP 1700+."

True enough. AMD usually does give large discounts from their advertised prices.

Matrox Parhelia 512 preview at Anandtech
Here's the summary page: anandtech.com

Some incredible new technology in it:
* Hardware Displacement Mapping - similar to texture mapping which maps each pixel's color to a new color based on a texture map, but it moves a mesh or set of triangles by varying amounts based on the contents of the displacement map.
* more intelligent anti-aliasing
* 5th order analog filtering improves output quality
* four vertex shaders, four rendering pipelines, 5-stage pixel shaders in each pipeline and 256-bit wide DDR memory interface (all these numbers are about double the best GeForce 4), but Anand says better NVidia drivers will eat up the difference except on newer games.)
* will have 80M transistors on UMC's 0.15µ process. That's twice as many as an Athlon XP!

Available June. Some features already licensed to Microsoft for use in Direct X 9, but it will NOT be DX9-compliant because that will require (apparently) 16-bit floating point (?!) for each color.

The big question is: Will yields be too low to make the cards affordable?

I hope Matrox is also making a 2-pipeline version for not-quite-hardcore gamers.
