SGI shares soar after analyst affirms stong buy

5/15/2002 1:43:22 PM

SAN FRANCISCO, May 15 (Reuters) - Shares of specialized computer maker Silicon Graphics Inc. (SGI) jumped 16 percent on Wednesday after Buckingham Research reaffirmed its strong buy rating.

Analyst Jay Stevens wrote in a May 14 research note that the 20-year-old Silicon Valley company -- which has focused on graphics-oriented, high-end computing after a failed attempt to broaden its market -- had "strong government business, solid cash flow, declining capex and depreciation expenses," and he targeted a $7 share price for the stock.

Stevens cut his revenue estimates for fiscal 2002 ending in June and 2003 due to a shortfall in the March quarter and reduced June quarter guidance, but he maintained his fiscal 2003 earnings estimate of 14 cents per share.

Shares of SGI rose 41 cents, or 15 percent, to $3.12 in afternoon trading Wednesday on the New York Stock Exchange. The shares have bounced from a low of around 30 cents last September to a high of $4.61 on March 13.
