German IG Metall -2: Joint News Conference May Mean Deal

BOEBLINGEN, Germany (Dow Jones)--The IG Metall labor union and the
Gesamtmetall employers association will hold a joint press conference at 1730
GMT, Frank Stroh, an IG Metall spokesman in Baden-Wuerttemberg, told reporters
Wednesday.

Stroh declined to specify whether regional negotiators, who have been talking
since 0815 GMT, reached a wage deal for the Baden-Wuerttemberg region's
engineering, electronics and metal workers.

Negotiators held separate press conferences after the last round of talks
broke down April 19, which may mean a deal has now been reached.

Strikes continued Wednesday in three German states, Baden-Wuerttemberg,
Berlin and Brandenburg, where wage talks were under way.

If a wage deal has been reached, it could become a pilot for the sector in
other states and the 2.7 million workers IG Metall represents.

It's also expected to set the pattern for settlements across the country. If
there's no deal Wednesday, strikes will continue for the next few days until
the parties return to the negotiating table again or involve an arbitrator.

France outperforming -- that is a puzzle -- they have the worst in terms of wage protections and socialized ... everything, don't they??
