Branisteanu Respond to of 32591 A Christian Response to the Moslem 'Occupation' of the Church of the Nativity Recently, many persons have questioned why Christians have not expressed any outrage at the Moslems who have taken over the Church of the Nativity in Beit Lechem (Bethlehem). Allow me to put forth one explanation for this misperceived "lack of response". The Church of the Nativity, for many Christians, is not a sacred place. It is, for the most part, just a shrine. It is not mentioned in the Scriptures — "Old" or "New" Testament. There is no record of the disciples ever going there to worship or to pray or even just to visit. It was not even 'identified' until the second century by Justin Martyr, a Christian apologist. The first church at the site was built by Helena, the mother of the Roman emperor Constantine, sometime around 326 AD; later destroyed it was rebuilt in much its present form by the Emperor Justinian around 529 AD. Archaeological evidence indicates that this cave was a pre-existing sacred site dedicated to Adonis, an ancient Greek vegetation spirit whose death and rebirth represented the cycle of nature. For many Christians, the only holy place is the Temple Mount, as decreed by the G-d of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. All of the Land of Israel has been chosen and set aside by G-d for His chosen people, the Jewish people. But G-d Himself declared, regarding the Temple Mount: "... this is the place of My throne and the place of the soles of My feet, where I will dwell among the sons of Israel forever...." (Ezekiel 43.7). All throughout Scripture, G-d continually points to Jerusalem and the Temple Mount. This is G-d's holy city and His holy place within that city. It is the hope of many Christians that the third Temple will be re-built in our lifetime. While it is true that the use of the facilities by Moslems for their terrorists activities is an outrage, I do not believe that it is a "desecration of a [Christian] holy site". It is an outrage what Moslems are doing to Israel, in general. The terror being committed against Israel by the PLO and other terrorist organizations — and permitted by the United States, United Nations, and other nations as well — is an outrage. These are the things that stir many Christians; not some former pagan shrine. It has been suggested that nothing has been said "out of fear of Moslem reprisal". That may be true for many Christians. However, for many others, Moslem reprisal is not a factor. We cannot live in fear and serve the Holy One of Israel at the same time. As the prophet Isaiah declared: "For Zion's sake will I not hold my peace, and for Jerusalem's sake I will not rest" (Isaiah 62:1). There are many Christians who totally support Israel's right to defend herself and look to Israel to reclaim all the land that is rightfully hers. It is reprehensible for the United States to enter into its own war on terror around the world and then demand that Israel stop defending herself against terrorists in her midst. (Note: I am based in the United States.) Israel is a sovereign nation. She should not answer to anyone but the Holy One of Israel. Lee Underwood Editor
