I think that's by design. Why would it be necessary to design a high density flash around underhood operating temperatures? Core automobile functionality doesn't need large flash densities (like you said, it's more likely that underdash applications would, like GPS support). Under the hood seems to be more suited for more robust, lower density designs.

heatsinker, yes, that is true. Underhood is extreme area.
the high density will be where it is needed and can get a higher price.
