Re: Releasing a horizontal product that gets this kind of a review from Mossberg, who everyone knows is honest (unlike much of the computer press)

I take issue with your statement. Mossberg represents the Wall Street Journal which has consistently backed Microsoft. After all, it's a newspaper that worships money.

Sun needs to realize that while Microsoft sometimes gets to go through five releases of nonworking garbage before it arrives at a viable product

Moreover, the source code of OpenOffice is being downloaded at 57,000 copies a week. People will start fixing things that they don't like. And many will be sharing their fixes. So StarOffice/OpenOffice will not require 5 releases to arrive at a "viable" product, assuming, that it's not viable now.

FWIW, I have not noticed the problems of which Mossberg complains while running the (fairly old, by now) Beta version. The default language definitely came up as "English (USA)" in my copy. The default for measurements _is_ centimeters, but that didn't bother me, and it's easily changed. A few seconds in the "Help" area pulls up voluminous information about how to format and number pages, including a "Howto" style tutorial; although it's different from Word, perhaps it's more flexible, too.

I downloaded openoffice.org a couple of nights ago, but haven't tried it out yet.

JMHO.
