I honestly was in conflict about whether he should go directly to university, for the reasons you mentioned (he is a good boy, but naive), and because it is just so big and intimidating. He was a good student, but sensitive to pressures, so one year is great, another "high mediocre". He has been mostly content to do things around the house, rather than running off, and although he has friends, he likes spending time with us. He wanted to live with us, so I couldn't send him to a small school far out of the metro area. St. John's is not suitable for his interests, and besides, my wife commutes to Washington, and we are tired of that, so we want to move closer to DC. So I cooked up the plan: if he got into Maryland, fine, otherwise he would go to Montgomery College, which is one of the better community colleges around, and tranfer. I was glad that UMCP encouraged him to transfer, and just as happy to go to the fallback.
