MADRID (Dow Jones)--Unemployment in Spain rose in the first quarter of 2002
to 11.50% of the active population, the national statistics institute, INE,
said Thursday.

This is the first time that INE has released its unemployment data since
revising the methodology used in calculating the figures to take into account
such effects as immigration.

INE said the new methodology is also closer to that used by the European
Union.

The result is that the data isn't truly comparable to previous quarters.

Using the old methodology, Spain's unemployment was 12.96% in the fourth
quarter of 2001. INE didn't provide revised figures for previous quarters.

INE said the total number of unemployed in the first quarter of 2002 was
2,081,100. By comparison, fourth quarter unemployment was 2,213,400 using the
old methodology.

INE said more than 85% of the increase in unemployed was in the 24-54 age
group, and of particular notice in women 25 or older and men 20-24.

INE said the number of households with all members unemployed was 490,300, or
up 14% from the previous quarter.
