If your going to call free traders Marxists then there might not be much point in having a conversation with you. as we have moved from an industrial economy to an information/service economy we have abandoned manufacturing industry. that is the difference. No that is not the difference. That is nonsense. We have not abandoned manufacturing in fact the value of goods manufactured in the US has gone up. And the % of people employed in manufacturing in the US has gone down but a lot less then the percentage employed in farming has. we import one-third of our fruits and vegetables. 1 - So what. Don't just state the figure develop some argument based on it. 2 - We export far more agricultural goods then we import. you sound like a libertarian, not a right wing extremist. almost no control on the economy? get ready for a lot more enrons! I'm not against accounting standards, or rules against fraud. But apart from outlawing things that are generally considered harmful and criminal, the government should stay out of the way. >> Secondly your whole point here is just a way to make an argument from authority << no it's to show how pathetic the republican party and the so-called conservative movement in america has become. neo-conservatives try to pass themselves off as true conservatives, but i am trying to inform you that traditional conservatism didn't believe in free trade. Even if you are right that traditionally conservatives supported high tariffs (and I don't conceed that point) 1 - The conservative movement respects tradition but it is not ossified. It does discard bad old ideas even if they where formally popular within the movement. 2 - The arguement then becomes about labels rather then substance. The label you give free trade (conservative, liberal, libertarian or other) says nothing about whether free trade is a good thing or not. I'd rather concentrate on the issue, then put all of the effort in to bringing up quotes to support the label that you want. neither are socialism and marxism! they just get repackaged and recycled and relabeled as free trade! Nonsense. Free trade is the opposte of socialism and marxism. Of course you can label marxism anything you want but I am talking about actual free trade, not marxism relabeled as "free trade", or "democracy", or "the starship Enterprise". free trade is! No it is not. Free trade is not imposing a utopian view on society because 1 - It is not utopian. Few if any supporters of free trade think it will be create utopia on earth, its just better then having high trade bariers. 2 - It isn't imposing anything. It is allowing people to freely decide what to buy or sell not imposing a condition on them. It is the exact opposite of imposing something. _ Re: Your TR quote from another post - What mechanism is free trade supposed to use to currode the moral fiber of society? How does paying taxes on imports protect societies moral fiber? Tim
