OYSTER BAY, N.Y. -- While cable-modem technology has a lead over Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) in the broadband race, the growth of cable telephony has also exceeded most industry forecasts.

There will be 5.21 million cable-telephony subscribers worldwide by the end of 2002, up 43.8% from to 2.93 million in 2001, according to a new report from Allied Business Intelligence (ABI) here today. Revenue generated by cable operators for cable telephony is projected to hit $2.11 billion dollars in 2002, according to ABI.

Cable operators continue to expand their investments in circuit switched technology, while also developing Internet Protocol (IP) cable telephony.

"The fundamental values of cable telephony are apparent,” said John W. Chang, who tracks the market for ABI. “Cable operators can now offer a bundled package of voice, data, and video, which significantly lowers churn rate, while increasing their revenue per subscriber," he said.
