Japanese electronics giant Toshiba Corp. will invest seven billion yen (55 million dollars) to create one of the world's largest production bases for personal computers in China.

Toshiba will build a factory and production line in Hangzhou, southeast of China, and plans to start operations in April next year, the business daily Nihon Keizai Shimbun said, without citing sources.

The Japanese company would initially manufacture 750,000 personal computers a year and aim to boost annual output capacity to 2.4 million units by 2004, the daily said.

In the future, Toshiba hopes to make digital electronics products such as DVDs and audiovisual equipment at the Hangzhou production base, it said.
