CG: That is called commerce. That is called marketing. That is called American business. Do you remember MSFT's market cap 20 yrs. ago. They certainly weren't the biggest kid on the block but they were certainly the scrappiest and had the street smarts.JFD

Charles,

It's not really the economics that I'm talking about, as a result of MS dominance. In fact, software and PC prices are probably a lot lower, and available to more folks because of MS dominance.

I just think that there are a lot of talented folks that don't get into the software business, because they would have to compete with MS, a major flaw in any business plan. I remember the days of killer apps, and must have upgrades from numerous companies. And I think that we would have a lot more interesting applications if things had worked out to be more competitive for the last ~10 years.

I think Microsoft is a great company, relentlessly competitive and very profitable.

John

Charles, Re: <the other was by using the latest Windows OS features to their Apps at least 6 months before any competitors could because the OS new features were developed partly to accomodate MSFT apps and the development of those features was not known to developers outside MSFT. ..>

Exactly, except that the problem is that the interfaces are *STILL* not fully published in many cases.

I remain convinced that if the MS Programming language group is split out the remainder(OS and Application Programming) could remain intact.
