The numbers correspond to the month. 1-9 for January through September and A-C for October through December. The number or letter is placed on the chart instead of an X or O, on either the first day of the month or on the first day that the box changes on the month, depending on the service. It is just a way to mark the passage of time on the chart. No other meaning.
