Under Islamic Sharia Law, apostasy is a capital crime. So is adultery (if you happen to be female), among other transgressions.

Hey, it's God's will.

In Saudi Arabia, beheadings occur on Friday's after the noon prayer, usually in a large public square. Everyone in the vicinity is obliged (by the muttawah religious police) to attend. Westerners and foreign guest workers get special encouragement to watch from the front row.

It's barbaric and gruesome but, as a deterrent, quite effective. As a result, there's not much of a threat of free inquiry into comparative religion (or history or philosophy for that matter) on the part of the masses.

On a tangent here, since experiencing this in S.A. I've come to feel that executions in America should also be conducted publicly. As long as we're going to kill people I think it's our responsibility as citizens to bear witness to what the state does in our name.
