Maurice:

<< They'll just go along with whatever political mania develops and public support is given. They won't oppose it, for fear of being seen as big, bad, corporates. A shame, but that's the price of manic environmentalism. >>

Sounds at though the cowering execs at BP never heard of spin. Although I understand their reluctance to squander the widely admired Big Oil reputation they have worked so hard to develop and protect. And it is unlikely that they, the providers of the precious lifeblood of the SUV, could convince J6P that the rantings of the manic, wild eyed enviros are incorrect. (J6P has been secretly longing to give up the SUV for a bicycle anyway.)

<<We have moved …to a time when the costs of uneconomic environmental actions are spread over everyone and wild-eyed environmentalists with no recognition of economics have their wicked way. >>

Not sure about NZ but in the US (and most places in the world?) the balance between economic development and environmental protection is hardly skewed in the direction you suggest.

re CO2 hoopla - seems that the fine dispersed carbon particles out of diesel motors (which have been subsidized in Europe for some time now) at several orders of magnitude bigger problem re climate than CO2.

I hope, Mq, you wont now cry out in triumph - "I've been saying that since 1968".
